This week at xxshot… (12/05/2008)

After being away for a week, checking out coffee culture (or lack of it) in other far off places, we couldn’t wait to get back to doubleshot for a cappuccino. With most of our regulars fasting for the week, or drinking some greyish, bad-tasting caffeine at other cafés, we weren’t alone in our craving for something closer to caffeine religion. So, early on Monday morning with the sun rising over the ocean and doubleshot, we pulled the first shots…

pulling a quick shot before opening…

It seems as though word has spread in the week we were away. Where other establishments are complaining about an absolute slowdown in trade now that most of the tourists have migrated with the birds, doubleshot is growing, and caffeine is beating in the blood of many more locals. With Klaus Oppenheimer’s magnificent black&white landscape photo exhibition, as well as Ryan Arenson’s positive and negative black camelthorn trees from his solo exhibition based on the works of Pierneef, BLACK,WHITE and COLOURED, doubleshot seems to offer a perfect space for artists to meet and chat. But besides art, topics amongst our regulars shift from the much awaited surf-swell, Sangoma workshops and medicinal plants, to local politics, which is always a gripe…

In other news:

While googling “doubleshot”, we couldn’t believe what we found on the www! We believe one of doubleshots’ first online reviews…

Cafe Society

And this from ‘Planet Plett‘…

“It even makes coffee
The new Double Shot Coffee Bar recently opened in Plett.  The concept was developed by two Lufthansa flight attendants who visited coffee bars all over the world, and combined the best elements into thier own coffee shop.
Located in the newly revamped centre, The Square (old Checkers centre), it boasts the fanciest coffee machine I have ever seen.  The Kees Van Der Western idrocompressor is worth a look.”

On Thursday… (21/02/2008)

Here are a few pics from this morning at doubleshot. Ma & Pa came to enjoy the vibe!

Otherwise we have been working on our “image”, by introducing Philip Stark “ghost chairs” as additional seating to our DOUBLESHOT crates, and designing a doubleshot coffeebar sticker, incorporating our latté art.

Plett is sizzling in 30°C and everybody is talking about the lunar eclipse and doubleshot coffee.

Check out karin’s “latté art” from today!

An awesome leaf on a doubleshot cappa which really impressed our second-timer, Christine, from Lower Saxony in Germany. THESE are our favourite shots!

But after all the coverage on www.africansurfer.com, where are all the surfers?!!!

Single naked shot… (02/02/2008)

What does this look like to you?

If you’re still blogged up and wondering… it’s a bubble after a naked (bottomless) extraction which we pulled using a single-basket portafilter; so it’s really just the air at the top of the column of water that has passed through the coffee puck.

Cowboy Coffee… (27/01/2008)

Yesterday a guy from Vancouver walked in. Said he loved the look of our coffeebar, it’s purity and minimalism. He sat outside at our ‘new’ old wooden table that walked in last week with one of our regulars. So now doubleshot has some eclectic outdoor seating!

Anyway, he immediately got onto the web and showed us his favourite coffeebar in Vancouver, where they brand their coffee “cowboy coffee“…

Don at DoubleShot...

And for a guy who doesn’t normally drink coffee, Philip seems to have found his spot somewhere between a cappa and an espresso!

New table!

Word is spreading… (13/01/2008)

May 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Recently one of our customers brought in an article from the Zigzag surf mag with Michael and the africansurfers featured! They’ve just travelled through Mali on their way up the west coast of Africa, and picked us up the Bogolan (mud cloth) from Djenne which now hangs on the wall. It’s always cool to chat about his travels with others…

Word of mouth is working wonders at doubleshot (don’t see pic!), and we’re slowly becoming quite the place to come for for coffee. Some folk come before going out for breakfast, and then after breakfast. Guess one day we will have to serve both.
