Greg Lourens @ doubleshot… (07/09/2008)

SHOP NOTE: WE ARE CURRENTLY AWAY SCOUTING NEW & AMAZING IDEAS, CHAIRS, ART AND BEANS, TO INCORPORATE INTO THE COFFEEBAR. DOUBLESHOT REOPENS 15 SEPTEMBER 2008 FOR YOUR DAILY FIX!

*     *     *     *     *     *

With our reopening we will be showcasing drawings that we brought back with us from Greg Lourens’s studio in Stellenbosch.  His work is awesomely beautiful and captivating,  and, up until now, fairly unknown in Plett and surrounds. Surely not for long…

Greg Lourens with his sensitively powerful drawings in pencil and coloured pencil

Greg said he would much rather have his art in public spaces and amongst people where many can access it, rather than in a gallery which just a few frequent. Already Greg’s drawing entitled “Gratitude” that he left with us after his first visit to doubleshot just a few weeks ago, has attracted so much attention and discussion and incredulous glances and second glances.

We hung Greg’s new work to doubleshot late on Friday night to see what it looks like; and they’re awesome: strong, powerful, subtely dominating, androgynous, and strangely beautiful.

It’s also confrontational, making the observer reflect and providing the window to change…

VIP visit & time for a break… (31/08/2008)

September 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Doubleshot sibling, Ingy, and Trevor, came to doubleshot for the first time this weekend. Quite a celebration which took months in the making! Of course, the chance of bumping into Robinson Crusoe’s lead actor, Philip Winchester, a regular to doubleshot on his rare days off the set, was an added attraction. Missed this visit, but perhaps on the next…

Doubleshot VIPS getting into the vibe!

We both desperately need a break after an extremely busy last couple of weeks. Someone asked us if we ever imagined doubleshot would turn into this “wild animal” that it is, as popular as it has become… laugh!

Eye candy… (25/08/2008)

Nothing too intellectual about this post, just some scenes from the best of doubleshot over the past few weeks!

yes… one of those! Karin’s ‘artisan pour’…

Doubleshot art on early winter’s morning just before opening.  Tatum’s “Proteas”, Klaus Oppenheimer’s b&w photography, and a black&white photo by Marty, of a woman going through a Sangoma ritual…very interesting as it is reminiscent of a Leigh Bowery picture, slightly blurred and taken at an angle between an old lady’s leg and her walking stick…

In the house… (21/08/2008)

September 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This is the crew from Emily Moon restaurant, who frequent doubleshot, taken shortly before Mox (far left) and Frank (far right) headed off to Australia in search of the perfect Oz flat-white. 10 days into their 6 month journey, Mox and Frank packed their bags and took the next flight back to doubleshot.

Also in the house was Helmut, a handyman from Germany, contemplating his fertility and role in creation. The “artefact” is an ode to Duchamp, created by Marty Reddering, a local carpenter in town, also as a response to Carol Levin’s “LIFE”, created out of sequins and depicting femininity…

No sugar required! (21/08/2008)

September 7, 2008 · 2 Comments

Here’s a pic of our latté (he)art, left at the bottom of doubleshot’s three-quarter cappa. With our chocolatey-fruit-cakey kind of espresso shots, using Origin Roasting espresso blend, combined with beautifully micro-foamed milk, one doesn’t need sugar!

If you link to Origin Coffee Roasters‘ website, you are confronted with “THE ARTISAN ROASTERS OF AFRICA”. At ORIGIN they source, roast, and blend with passion and dedication and supply us with their high quality coffee beans. They have a variety of coffee, both single origin as well as blends. We predominantly use their HOUSE ESPRESSO blend, a smooth blend of beans from six countries, including India, Guatemala, Indonesia, El Salvador, Dominican Republic and Rwanda. Soon we hope to be offering Single origin beans as a Filter Coffee alternative.

Interesting ice-creams… and the ‘francchiato’! (21/08/2008)

September 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We’ve been experimenting with two more ice cream flavours: ristretto&orange, and ristretto-green olive. Both are delightful, the latter bringing the most surprises to the undiscerning. Many imagined they were tasting figs, dates or peanut-butter, and everyone loved it. Even dyed-in-the-wool olive haters, like John of Emily Moon Restaurant, couldn’t believe they were drooling over the creamy coffee-olive combo.

Not a bad reaction from a dyed-in-the-wool olive hater!

Frank is a good mate of John’s who couldn’t believe that John was actually eating olives! Frank has founded his own doubleshot creation, now called a “Francchiato”, which is obviously a doubleshot macchiato, but served in a cappuccino cup, with an extra serving of micro-foamed milk foam.

Frank…

Now we’ve just got to think of a suitable name for the ice-cream so as not to scare off little red-riding-hoods before they’ve tried it. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Marshmallow mania! (19/08/2008)

September 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Doubleshot hasn’t been dormant, rather very busy under-ground, developing various new coffee-related specialities. Today saw the launch of doubleshot artisan marshmallows: giant and fluffy and very very more-ish. It’s base is doubleshot ristretto, and one can distinctly taste our espresso blend. We now don’t only have coffee addicts, but mallow addicts, too!
